The Walter Trumbauer Theatre Festival is Alabama's statewide high school theatre festival. Each fall, nearly 100 high schools across the state first compete at their district festivals in 33 individual event (IE) categories covering performance and technical theatre, as well as a one-act festival. One acts and IEs that are passed on from their districts compete at the State Festival, a three-day event held each December. Trumbauer State brings together almost 3000 students from across the state.
For many schools, the big event is the one-act festival. Usually, 14 to 17 one acts from across the state perform at the State Festival. A panel of five judges confers a number of awards and selects two of the plays to represent the state at the Southeastern Theatre Conference the following March.
During my tenure at Spain Park, we were named Best in Show five of the seven years, and elected to represent the state two of those years.
I served as District Chair three years, as Secondary Chair from 2012-2013, and was named High School Theatre Teacher of the Year in 2015.
